Basic Crochet Stitches

These are instructions for stitches as given in UK patterns. If you wish to follow a US pattern please check on the conversion page for a comparison chart for terms used.

ch = chain
Wrap yarn over hook and draw through loop on hook to produce a new loop. Tighten previous loop. Continue to make as many loops in chain as needed. Don’t pull too tight and take care not to twist the length of chain

dc = double crochet
Insert hook through target loop. Wrap yarn over hook. Draw yarn through. You now have two loops on hook. Wrap yarn over hook and draw through both loops.

tr = treble
Wrap yarn over hook. Insert hook through target chain. Wrap yarn over hook. Draw yarn through target loop only. Wrap yarn over hook again. Draw yarn through the first two loops only. Wrap yarn over hook again and draw through the 2 loops on hook.

sl.st. = slip stitch
insert hook through loop. Catch yarn over hook and pull through both the target loop and the loop on the hook. You have now joined the two loops and have just one loop on the hook.

These four basic stitches are the main ones used in most patterns that you will come across. The “fanciness” comes from the way these stitches are used together. If you learn these you will be able to follow all patterns for beginners and a good many more. You’ll enjoy the many ways that these stitches can be grouped together.

The following stitches will be easier for you to work once you have become skilled at using the four above.

htr = half treble
Wrap yarn over hook. Insert hook into target loop. Wrap yarn over hook. Draw yarn through target chain. Wrap yarn over hook again. Draw yarn through all 3 loops now on hook.

dtr = double treble
Wrap yarn over hook twice and insert hook into target loop. Wrap yarn over hook. Draw yarn through first 2 loops only. Wrap yarn over again. Draw yarn through next two loops only. Wrap yarn over hook again. Draw yarn through the last two loops on hook.

ttr = triple treble
Wrap yarn over hook 3 times. Insert hook into target loop. Wrap yarn over hook. Draw yarn through target only and wrap yarn again. Draw through first 2 loops only. Wrap yarn again. Repeat last step twice more. Draw through last 2 loops on hook.
